An electronic 'eye' alerts drivers of tall vehicles and diverts them to an 'escape route' to the left of the entrance. The headroom is only 12.5 feet (3.8 m) due to the tunnel having to pass beneath the bridge abutment by a 1:12 gradient. It is only 17 feet (5.2 m) wide and, as a result, it is normally one-way northbound because of the side clearances required. The new underpass was built by John Mowlem & Co and opened on 21 January 1964. Curving round from the new road underpass alignment here onto the. The underpass is built within part of the former Kingsway tramway subway, which was 20 feet (6.1 m) wide and allowed bi-directional flow because of the fixed rails and relatively narrow width of the trams. The Aldwych branch of the Piccadilly Line has always been strange in that although it was operated as a basic single train shuttle service from early on in its life, the line was originally built as a double track, with two platforms at Aldwych and two platforms at Holborn, only one of which connected to the North. Aldwych is known for two disused tunnels: the disused Aldwych branch of the London Underground and the Kingsway Underpasses - one of which is used to carry.
